Meet The Motha Of The House

Picture this… a 30-year-old queer woman during the pandemic picks up her first plant from Loew’s… That’s it that’s the story.

Well, that’s part of the story. My name is Kayla Mejia & I grew up in NYC - growing up my mom had 2 hanging plants in our kitchen. They lived for what felt like forever & I wanted no part in taking care of them.

Meanwhile, my maternal grandmother was known for having the biggest & best green thumb - everyone would bring their dying plants to her & she would bring them back to life. Inside & outside of her home was lush, green & beautiful. But again I wanted no part in any of it.

Fast forward to the pandemic & something said, “Just try it” & I never looked back. I became obsessed with my plants - they are one of my many happy places.

Here’s to Bernice….

Dear Grandma,

You would always say, “As I am, you will be” & I couldn’t be happier.

FAQ’S:

  • Sounds like a Haus Call would be your best bet! As much as I wish I could just say “water it more” or “spray this on it” … I can’t - at least not without seeing the plant & speaking to you about it.

  • It took me until my 30s to even consider giving plants a chance. I was convinced I didn’t have a green thumb like my grandmother. In other words - if you want to sure but know that the highs & lows of plants is what makes them worth it.

  • Chile! Patience and grace - period.
